Bucky: A Personal Purposeful Hero

BuckyOne of my heroes through the years has been Buckminster Fuller, AKA Bucky to his friends and fans. I was fortunate to hear Bucky speak many years ago at an Earth Day outside Amherst Ma. While he wasn’t known as a great orator, he had one of the quickest minds even in his latter years.

It wasn’t until much later that I learned that Bucky had had his own ‘dark night of the soul’ experience that almost ended in his taking his own life, but that eventually led him onto a much different path — a path that allowed him to make an extraordinary difference with millions of people.  His downward path spiraled out of control when his beloved daughter, Alexandra, died of pneumonia.

Fuller was inconsolable with guilt, blaming himself for her death. The guilt and shame led him into an alcohol-fueled depression that took him to the brink of suicide. But something happened that stopped the downward spiral. Suddenly Bucky asked himself a though-evoking question that not only saved his life but also launched him on the path that would eventually make him famous.

You see, in his depressed mindset, Bucky was constantly thinking about everything that was wrong with the world and all the awful challenges. But then he had an idea that was so exciting to him that he resolved then and there to put it into practice. As he spoke about it later, he embarked on “an experiment, to find what a single individual can contribute to changing the world and benefiting all humanity.”  He’d discovered his own life on purpose.

I love this story because it illustrates the power of shifting our thinking from what’s not working to what’s possible.  Two of my favorite coaching questions that I often ask myself as well as my clients are:

What’s working?  What’s already working in your life and how can you move ahead by focusing more on what’s working and less on what’s wrong?

The other question is: “What’s missing the presence of which could make a real difference?”

Often times, this second question leads people to realize that one of the things missing in their life isn’t really a material thing at all. What they realize has been missing in their life is real ‘clarity of purpose’ — knowing their true, Divinely Inspired Purpose with such clarity that it has the power to literally shape all of their life — their decisions, their choices, their actions, and over time the results of their life.

I realize that such ‘clarity of purpose’ may not be a pancea for everyone…but it sure comes close.  Knowing your purpose with crystal clarity can be a transformational ‘meta-insight’ that can completely alter your entire life when you commit to living true to it.Bucky’s life is a perfect example.

Life On Purpose Mentoring Program

People find there way to Life On Purpose Institute for many different reasons.

  • Perhaps you long for a deeper spiritual connection,
  • Maybe you feel you’re drifting through life –  just going through the motions,
  • It could be that you find yourself at a crossroads in your life and not sure which direction to turn. If so, you may feel stuck, confused or unsure how to move forward.
  • Or it could be you feel overwhelmed and stressed out right now.

Perhaps You’ve Tried These Options

Often when such challenges arise in life we may start by trying to ignore the quiet voice of “Divine Discontent.” Unfortunately, that rarely works, so you may simply try to work your way out of it. If neither of these strategies work (and they seldom do), then you may resort to trying to anesthetize yourself…either by overindulging in alcohol, drugs, too much television, hours and hours of video games, or nighttime binges of ice cream.

And still, the quiet call…”there must be more to life than you’re experiencing” continues.

These solutions and strategies rarely work. Instead, they often only prolong the pain and discontentment because they really don’t get to source of the issue. The only thing I’ve found that really works when Divine Spirit is calling you out, is to answer the call.

What you need to do is not ignore the call, not keep hanging up on the call, not try to change your number.  Instead the only real, lasting solution is to answer the call by becoming clear why you brought yourself to this life — to identify, once and for all, your life purpose — your Divinely Inspired Purpose.

But knowing what ‘to do’ is only part of the answer.  The real question that then needs to be answered is ‘how’?

HOW do you become crystal clear what your Divinely Inspired Life Purpose is?

And once you know your purpose HOW do you design your life to be a true and authentic reflection of that purpose?

These are some of the questions that are explored in depth in our upcoming Life On Purpose Mentoring Program.

I’m not kidding. I truly do believe and am committed that for the small group of people (as few a 6, as many as 10) people who enroll into this program, we’ll work diligently and play purposefully to give you a life on purpose back to you at the end of the year.
