The Insanity of an Off Purpose Life

Most people would agree Albert Einstein was a pretty smart guy and not just about physics. Here are two of my favorite quotes attributed to him:

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

” We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”

When we ‘mash’ these two ideas together we can drill down to a new depth of wisdom. Doing the same thing over strange-albert-einsteinand over expecting different results often starts with using the same kind of thinking to solve a problem that originally created it.  Let’s apply this bit of wisdom to one of my favorite subjects – living a life on purpose.

Over the almost two decades as a Life On Purpose Coach I’ve asked many people what percentage of the almost eight billion people on this planet would they say really knew their life purpose with crystal clarity and are living true to it most of the time. The responses have been abysmally small — 1/2 percent, 3 percent, 1 percent. I once had someone say 10 percent and the rest of the audience about laughed him out of the room.

So, the question that leads to is, why so small? How come so few people really know their life purpose much less are living consistent with it? Well, consider this:

We’ve been thinking the same thing over and over, the same kind of thinking that has kept us stuck with a world of people pretty clueless about their life purpose…and it’s time to stopping thinking and acting so insanely.

Rethinking Purpose

Said another way, it’s time we rethink the whole notion of what a life purpose actually is because how we’ve thought about life purpose has left us with most of 8 billion people clueless about their true life purpose.  In the process it’s left us with a world where drug and alcohol abuse is rampant, working ourselves into an early grave is considered normal, even heroic, and suicide is continually on the rise. On top of that, we have a culture that has the highest standard of living when it comes to material matters, while our level of happiness and satisfaction has continued to decline.

It’s time for all of us to wake up!
