Happy New Year everyone! As best I can tell, the New Year is a global phenomenon though there are some exceptions. Evidently, according to a quick Google search, people in Israel kinda celebrate on New Year Eve but then have to go to work on January 1. But I think it’s safe to say that most everyone around the world celebrates the New Year on December 31 and January 1st as a start to a new year.
But here’s the thing…January 1st is really just another day like all the other 365 days in the year. It has the same number of hours, minutes and seconds as all the other days, right? So, what makes January 1 so special?
Answer: It’s the context we create around it. It’s what we collectively agree to make it mean. That’s it. It’s that simple and yet profound in its simplicity. New Year’s Day is a perfect example of the power of context to shape and influence our lives. By agreement millions of people around the world gathered together in the major cities around the world to celebrate the end of the old year and the beginning of the new year even though there’s really no difference between Dec. 31 and January 1 or with any of the other 363 days.
I watched as an estimated 1 million people stood in Times Square in freezing temperatures (around 23 degrees) to watch the dropping of the ball all because we’ve agreed that’s the thing to do. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a problem with this. I think it’s great even though I much prefer watching the antics on TV than actually going there.
Now, millions of people are creating their New Year Resolutions and/or setting new goals for what they intend to accomplish in the new year. It’s an exciting time, isn’t it, even though in truth it’s all made up.
So What’s this Have to Do with Living On Purpose?
Everything!
You see, from the Life On Purpose Perspective, one’s Divinely Inspired Life Purpose does the same thing. It gives the individual a new and empowering context for their life that then has the power to shape and form that life including that person’s decisions, choices, and actions as well as their experience of life itself.
Of course, it’s also helpful to first become clear what’s been shaping your life — the ol’ fear-based Inherited Purpose that so often operates in the background of our awareness pulling our strings and sabotaging our ability to live true to ourselves. Now this can be revealing and more than a little disturbing at first. As one person so generously shared with me via an email over the holidays:
…Through your book I have come to recognize how strongly my life is shaped by what you name Inherited Life Purpose. I just finished my life line and the revelation of the incredible survival mode I am operating from is shaking me up thoroughly.
Ahh, but on the other side of that shake up comes the possibility of reclaiming your life by creating a new context that is based in Universal Love and your true essence as a spiritual being.
That’s why every year around this time I admonish people to forget about New Year Resolutions and instead devote some quality time to becoming clear about your true, Divinely Inspired Life Purpose. And if you’d like some quality support and guidance along the way, be sure to check out the various resources we offer including the ones we’re offering through our Start Your Year On Purpose specials.
May this be your most on purpose, passion-filled and playful year yet!
