Resources for Rainforest Shaman
Pachamama Alliance: This is the organization that started it all and eventually led me to write Rainforest Shaman, but it really started over 25-years ago when I met one of its co-founders, John Perkins. You can read the article that I wrote from that meeting here. You can read a more detailed story behind the story here. Here’s a little more about the Pachamama Alliance.
Together, we are healing ourselves and the Earth.
With roots in the Amazon rainforest, we equip people around the world with inspiration and training to regenerate the planet’s ecosystems, bring justice to their communities, and restore our relationships with the Earth, each other, and ourselves.
Rainforest Alliance: The Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit organization working at the intersection of business, agriculture, and forests to make responsible business the new normal. We are building an alliance to protect forests, improve the livelihoods of farmers and forest communities, promote their human rights, and help them mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis. I recommend you start by finding out what layer of the rainforest you are.
Amazon Watch: Amazon Watch fights the destruction of the Amazon rainforest and advances the rights of indigenous peoples in the Amazon Basin. They partner with indigenous and environmental organizations in campaigns for human rights, corporate accountability, and the preservation of the Amazon’s ecological systems.
Amazon Conservation Team: This organization works with indigenous leaders to ensure the long-term welfare of the Amazon Rainforest. They partner with indigenous communities to protect the Amazon’s biodiversity for the benefit of all humankind.
Amazon Conservation Association: The Amazon Conservation Association has trained hundreds of conservationists who work to support the restoration of the Amazon Rainforest and sustainable Indigenous-led economies. The organization has planted more than 275,000 trees to date.
Survival International: There is no protecting the Amazon without Indigenous communities leading the way. Survival International recognizes this imperative and works to amplify the voices of Indigenous leaders.
International Working Group for Indigenous Affairs: The International Working Group for Indigenous Affairs focuses on protecting Indigenous cultures, which always includes an environment-first approach.
Rainforest Action Network: The Rainforest Action Network preserves forests, protects the climate, and upholds human rights by challenging corporate power and systemic injustice through frontline partnerships and strategic campaigns.
Rainforest Trust: The Rainforest Trust has saved more than 23 million acres of the Amazon Rainforest since 1988 by funding projects that restore and protect ecosystems.
Mongabay: Mongabay provides information on tropical forests, deforestation, and biodiversity. It has a vast array of data and news about the world’s tropical rainforests. The website is divided into sections for easier navigation and also has a version for younger readers.
National Geographic – Rainforests 101: This page from National Geographic provides information about tropical and temperate rainforests, how they contribute to the global ecosystem, and the conservation efforts to protect these biomes.
